Realme GT Master Edition Review

Realme has swapped its flagship X lineup for the new GT series this season. The first model of the new line went on sale in the summer, and it is called that: Realme GT. At the moment, this is perhaps the most affordable smartphone on Qualcomm’s flagship mobile platform. A little later, the series was replenished with the Realme GT Master Edition smartphone. This is a much more affordable device, but it is no less interesting for the end user and even managed to get the prestigious iF Design Award 2021.

Appearance and usability

The Realme GT Master Edition comes in exactly the same stylishly designed cardboard box, about a quarter larger than the standard dimensions, as the flagship Realme GT.

The shape of the new product differs little from the Realme GT. But in details it looks even more advantageous. It has no gloss, the back surface is more solid, matte. The camera block has turned from a dark heavy rectangle into a light transparent segment that does not contrast at all with the rest of the body. All in all, it looks visually lighter, airier and more expensive than the standard glossy Realme GT with a dark block on the back.

Realme GT Master Edition not only looks sleek, it is also comfortable to hold in your hand. The device is very thin and very light, especially by today’s standards, when it is already difficult to find a powerful mobile device weighing less than 200 grams. No curved slippery and glare edges of the glass, no sharp side edges – everything is done with the mind.

You can use the complete cover. It is not transparent, but solid, matte, neutral gray in color and with a pleasant to look and feel soft-touch surface. The case is thin, it does not spoil the graceful forms of the thin body.

The side keys are large, with good travel, but, unfortunately, they are not installed on one side, but on opposite sides.

The front camera is hidden behind a round cutout in the corner of the screen matrix. There is no event LED.

The fingerprint scanner is located under the glass of the screen, it is not ultrasonic, but optical. The scanner works more or less quickly, but, of course, slower than the capacitive one.

You can install two Nano-SIM cards in the slot on the side, but there was no place for a memory card. Hot swap of cards is supported.

At the bottom there is a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones, a speaker, a microphone and a USB Type-C connector.

Smartphone Realme GT Master Edition is available in a silver case with a matte back, as well as in a gray version with leather trim (“vegan leather”), the author of which is Naoto Fukasawa, a famous Japanese designer. The case did not receive full protection from water and dust.

The Realme GT Master Edition smartphone is equipped with a 6.43-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 × 2400, covered by a flat glass without curved edges. The physical dimensions of the screen are 67 × 149 mm, the aspect ratio is 20: 9, and the dot density is 409 ppi. The width of the frame around the screen is 3 mm from the sides, 4 mm from the top and 5 mm from the bottom. The display supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are not worse than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left – Nexus 7, on the right – Realme GT Master Edition, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the Realme GT Master Edition is slightly lighter (brightness in the photos is 114 versus 110 for the Nexus 7) and does not have a pronounced shade. The doubling of reflected objects in the Realme GT Master Edition screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (much better in efficiency than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are easier to remove, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of regular glass.

With manual brightness control and with a full-screen white field, the maximum brightness value was about 400 cd / m², and in very bright light and in the case of automatic adjustment, it rises to 570 cd / m². It should also be borne in mind that in this case, the smaller the white area on the screen, the lighter it is, that is, the actual maximum brightness of the white areas will almost always be higher than the indicated values. As a result, given the good anti-glare properties, daytime readability in the sun should be at an acceptable level. The minimum brightness value is 1.8 cd / m², so in complete darkness the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located under the screen close to the upper edge to the right of the center horizontally). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: with it, the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If you do not intervene, then in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 1.8 cd / m2 (very dark), in an office illuminated with artificial light (approximately 550 lx) sets it to 125 cd / m2 (normal), and conditionally in direct sunlight light brightness reaches 570 cd / m² (maximum, which is needed). We slightly increased the brightness in complete darkness and got: in complete darkness 10 cd / m², “in the office” – 125 cd / m², “in the sun” – 570 cd / m², such a result suited us. It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and allows the user to customize his work for individual requirements.

This screen uses a Super AMOLED matrix – an active matrix on organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors – red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are half the red and blue subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a micrograph:

In the fragment above, you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 red (4 halves) and 2 blue (1 whole and 4 quarters), while repeating these fragments, you can lay out the entire screen without gaps and overlaps. For such matrices, Samsung has introduced the name PenTile RGBG. The manufacturer calculates the screen resolution for green subpixels, for the other two it will be two times lower. Of course, there are some uneven contrast borders and other artifacts. However, due to the high resolution, they only have a minimal effect on the image quality.

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, when deviated even at small angles, the white color acquires a light blue-green or pinkish tint, but the black color remains simply black at any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case.

The colors on the screen of the Realme GT Master Edition are oversaturated (note the tomatoes, bananas, the napkin and the complexion) and the color balance is noticeably different. Recall that a photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color rendition and is provided only for a conditional visual illustration. In particular, the pronounced reddish tint of white and gray fields present in the photographs of the Realme GT Master Edition screen is visually absent when viewed from a perpendicular view, which is confirmed by hardware tests using a spectrophotometer. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera sensor does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.

Whereas in the case of the Tenderness profile, the situation is better:

Saturation is normal, no increase in color contrast is observed, color balance is clearly closer to standard.

The brightness at an angle on both screens decreased noticeably (to avoid strong darkening, the shutter speed was increased compared to previous photos), but in the case of the Realme GT Master Edition, the drop in brightness is less. As a result, with formally the same brightness, the Realme GT Master Edition screen visually looks much brighter (in comparison with LCD screens), since you often have to look at the screen of a mobile device at least from a slight angle.

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens and the brightness of the Realme GT Master Edition at an angle is noticeably higher.

The switching of the state of the matrix elements is performed almost instantly, but at the turn-on front there may be a step with a width of about 17 ms (which corresponds to a screen refresh rate of about 60 Hz) or about 8 ms (120 Hz). For example, this is how the dependence of brightness on time looks like when switching from black to white and vice versa (60 Hz mode).

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to trails (and leads), reaching after moving objects.

The gamma curve plotted using 32 points with equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray showed that there was no significant blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.42, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2, so the picture is slightly darkened. In this case, the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power dependence.

Recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of the image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image – it slightly decreases for generally light images. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve), most likely, does not exactly correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of shades of gray on almost the entire screen.

Note that normal sRGB-optimized images appear unnaturally saturated on screens with wide color gamut without proper color correction. Hence the recommendation: in most cases, watching movies, photographs and everything natural is better when choosing the Tenderness profile. The Vivid Color profile is appropriate when viewing material with DCI-P3 coverage, which is common in digital cinema, but is rarely found in everyday life.

The balance of shades on the gray scale after choosing the Tenderness profile is good – the color temperature is quite close to the standard 6500 K, while this parameter does not change very much in a significant part of the gray scale, which improves the visual perception of the color balance. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is below 10 units, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device, and the spread of this characteristic is also not very large.


(In most cases, the darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there does not really matter, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is high.)

This product has the ability to correct the color balance by adjusting the cool-warm hue. But there is no particular sense in doing this, it is enough to choose the Tenderness profile. Also in the settings you can reduce the intensity of the blue component.

In principle, bright light can disrupt the circadian rhythm (see the article about iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display), but everything is solved by lowering the brightness to a low, but still comfortable level, and distorting the color balance, reducing the contribution of blue , there is absolutely no point.

Let’s summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness (up to 570 cd / m²) and has good anti-reflective properties, so the device can be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value (up to 1.8 cd / m²). It is also acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, a mode with a high refresh rate (120 Hz), as well as a color gamut close to sRGB and good color balance (when choosing the right profile). At the same time, let’s recall the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color (if nothing is reflected in the screen), good uniformity of the white field, noticeably less than that of LCDs, a drop in image brightness when viewed from an angle. Disadvantages include screen flickering detected at low brightness, and in this case, DC Dimming reduces the visibility of flicker, but does not completely eliminate it. Overall, however, the screen quality is very high.


At the rear, the Realme GT ME has three cameras: main, ultra-wide-angle and a module for macro photography.

The main 64-megapixel module shoots at 16 megapixels by default with the pixel binning function, but you can switch to shooting at full 64 megapixel resolution. PDAF phase detection autofocus behaves adequately in all cases. There is no optical stabilizer. The change of resolution is carried out as quickly as possible – right on the viewfinder screen.

When looking at full size, the 64-megapixel picture is noisy, however, due to the saved noise, the detail is noticeably higher, and the image is natural in the shadows, while in the processed 16-megapixel image in the shadows, there may be a daub about the fantasies of the processing program. However, with the typical use of smartphone photos, that is, when looking at them directly from the smartphone screen, without magnification, there is practically no difference between pictures of two resolutions. So if you plan to use fragments of the original photos or send them for processing to photo editors, then it is better to use 64-megapixel photos, otherwise the 16-megapixel mode is definitely preferable. In the very corners of the images, there is a sharp loss of detail with blur.

In good light, the camera produces a juicy, sharp and quite detailed picture with good contrast and correct color rendition. The camera, although not flagship, is quite decent.

As usual, there are many options to add color or change the picture beyond recognition using color filters, as well as effects like tilt-shift (here it is called “shift / skew”).

Also, it was in this model that a new set of color filters, called “Street”, first appeared. According to the creators, it is intended to provide a similarity to the shooting of professional street photographers. Options include Kodak film imitation and stylish black and white mode.

The wide-angle module generally matches the color rendition of the main camera and produces a rather pleasant picture with good sharpness in the center and moderately strong blur at the edges of the frame. The settings have a function for correcting geometric distortions. The viewing angle of this lens is 119 °. The detail of the wide-angle module is, of course, lower than that of the main one, but it is not easy to notice it from the thumbnails.

The smartphone does not have a telephoto lens, the zoom is only digital. If there is a desire, then it is better to independently enlarge a fragment of the picture in Photoshop, since the quality of the digital zoom in a smartphone is expectedly low.

The simple 2-megapixel module is designed for close-up close-up photography of objects. The quality of the pictures is low, the image does not please with special beauty and vividness. It is much better to take macro photos with the main camera (and then, if necessary, “zoom in” a little).

In the night mode, the picture quality is much worse than that of the flagship of the line – Realme GT.

The smartphone can shoot 4K video at 30 fps (there is a 60 fps icon on the screen, but switching to this mode is blocked). This is a clear division of the GT and GT ME models into different niches. There is electronic stabilization, but it only appears in the 1080p @ 30 fps mode, while the detail is noticeably worse. The quality of video recording is generally at the usual high-quality level, nothing more.

The selfie camera with a Sony IMX615 sensor of a very high resolution 32 MP (for the front camera) is able to take excellent pictures, both in normal and in portrait mode with background blur. A high level of detail and a good study of shadows, highlights, correct color rendition, an even background, clear outlines of an object in the frame – all this makes the camera one of the best front cameras in its segment.

Telephone part and communications

The new X53 modem supports a wide range of wireless frequencies, including LTE Cat.24 and 5G networking standards. In practice, within the city limits of the Moscow region, the device demonstrates reliable operation in wireless networks, does not lose connection, and quickly restores connection after a forced break.

The smartphone also has a wireless adapter with support for Wi-Fi 6 / 6E (802.11a / b / g / n / ac / ax, 2×2 MIMO) and Bluetooth 5.2, NFC support is implemented.

The navigation module works with GPS (with A-GPS), with the domestic Glonass, with the Chinese Beidou and the European Galileo, and also with QZSS. The first satellites are detected quickly even with a cold start, the positioning accuracy is not a problem.

The voice of the interlocutor in the speaker is loud and intelligible. The vibration motor is of medium power, the vibration intensity can be adjusted using the slider in the settings.

Software and multimedia

As a software platform, Realme GT ME uses Android 11 OS with its own Realme UI 2.0 shell. The interface is fast, the animations are smooth, the appearance is laconic, but everything is convenient. The advantageous difference from other Chinese shells is the complete absence of intrusive ads and a lot of unnecessary pre-installed free applications.

There are additional modes of operation – game, children. The Realme GT series also exclusively introduces the eponymous GT Mode, which helps optimize the performance of demanding applications to increase the frame rate in games, activates the smooth picture mode and supports special sounds and animations when using the smartphone.

The smartphone does not have stereo speakers, the only speaker sounds loud and clear enough. Unlike the flagship, there is no support for Dolby Atmos, but there is Real Sound technology. There is a 3.5mm audio output for wired headphones. In the headphones, the volume and sound quality are also decent.


The Realme GT ME is equipped with an eight-core SoC Qualcomm SM7325 Snapdragon 778G 5G (4 × Cortex-A78 @ 2.4 GHz + 4 × Cortex-A55 @ 1.8 GHz). The GPU Adreno 642L plays the role of the GPU.

The amount of RAM is 6 or 8 GB, the storage is 128 or 256 GB. DRE is used – a technology of dynamic memory expansion, which allows you to use the memory of the drive as operational, that is, the existing 6/8 GB of RAM can be expanded to 8/11 GB of virtual memory. You cannot install a memory card into a smartphone. Supports connection of external devices to the USB Type-C port in USB OTG mode.

Realme GT Master Edition on the sub-flagship SoC Snapdragon 700 series, produced according to the 6 nm process technology, demonstrates decent results in synthetic tests and does not suffer from a lack of performance in real use. The platform is completely fresh and very solid, its capabilities are enough for smooth interface operation, quick opening of any applications and the ability to play any, even demanding games at medium and high graphics settings. The device handles the most demanding games (Call of Duty Mobile, Injustice 2) without slowdowns.

Benchmarking AnTuTu and GeekBench

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the most recent versions of popular benchmarks, we have summarized for convenience in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain behind the scenes – due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

The heating is higher in the upper part of the device, which, apparently, corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 39 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), which is not very much.

Video playback

This unit, apparently, does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode for USB Type-C – output image and sound to an external device when connected to the USB port. (The report of the usbview.exe program.) Therefore, we had to confine ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Testing technique for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In our tests we used the MX Player video player in the “Hardware” mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

Note: If green marks are set in both the Uniformity and Gaps columns, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven interleaving and skipping of frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the comfort viewing. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

In terms of the frame output criterion, the playback quality of video files is very good, since frames or groups of frames can (but do not have to) be output with uniform intervals of intervals and without gaps. In the mode with a screen refresh rate of 120 Hz, video playback is still in 60 fps mode. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p), the image of the video file itself is displayed one-to-one pixel by pixel, exactly at the height of the screen (in landscape orientation) and in true Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen is the actual brightness range for the video file. True, there is a blockage in the shadows for a couple of shades and when the brightness decreases, it increases slightly – more and more shades merge with black. Note that this smartphone has support for hardware decoding of H.265 files with a color depth of 10 bits per color, while displaying gradients on the screen is carried out with better quality than in the case of 8-bit files. However, this is not proof of 10-bit output. Display of HDR files (HDR10, HEVC) is also supported.

Battery life

Realme GT ME received a built-in battery with not the largest volume by today’s standards. The autonomy of the device is satisfactory, but far from a record one.

The tests were traditionally carried out at the usual level of power consumption without using power saving functions, although there are some in the device.
